Until recently, our daily driver was a Mazda CX-30 2.0, which we owned from nearly new. It had previously been a Mazda dealer’s test-drive car, and we originally bought it for my wife after she started a new job in the south of Luxembourg, where getting to work by public transport would have required something resembling a small expedition.
It quickly became our main family car. In just over five years, we covered nearly 150,000 km and travelled across a large part of Europe, including road trips as far as Italy and Lithuania. It proved extremely reliable, economical and comfortable enough for long journeys. My only real complaint was that I wished it had a little more power — especially with luggage, passengers and a long motorway ahead.
At the moment, I do not really have one dedicated daily driver. Instead, the job is shared between two cars that were supposedly bought for weekends: the Mazda MX-5 ND and the Pontiac GTO. During winter, the Suzuki Swift Sport will take over from one of them. So, for now, my daily driver is less a specific car and more a rotating committee of questionable practicality.
Next year, I will probably need to look for something more sensible: usable all year round and in all weather, practical enough for everyday life, but still comfortable for long road trips. Ideally, it should also have enough character that driving it does not feel like a household chore.
Surprisingly — or perhaps not — all of these cars are basically stock. Blame TÜV.
Well… almost. The MX-5 has an aftermarket exhaust, but it is fully road legal and was already fitted when I bought the car.
