One day I’ll share the story of how I bought a Mazda RX-8… twice. But today, this is about my bright orange Pontiac GTO — or Holden Monaro, depending on which side of the Atlantic you are standing.
The timing made it particularly irrational. It was April 2026, barely a month after the Iran war had begun, and fuel prices were close to their peak. While everyone else seemed to be thinking about economy, hybrids and EVs, I was considering a 6.0-litre V8. It was almost the exact opposite of what any sensible buyer was looking for at the time.
It started after I watched a Gears and Gasoline road-trip video, which I highly recommend. One of the presenters had just bought a Pontiac GTO, and it immediately brought back my long-standing curiosity about the Monaro. When I lived in the UK, I was always interested in the Vauxhall version, but around 15 years ago they were already rare and far too expensive for me.
While watching the video, I casually opened mobile.de to see whether any Pontiac GTOs were available in Europe. To my surprise, there was exactly one.
Even more surprisingly, it was finished in striking orange, appeared to be in good condition and was advertised just across the border in Germany. When I contacted the seller, I discovered that the car was actually located in Luxembourg.
After that particular sequence of coincidences — followed by some lengthy but ultimately successful persuasion negotiations with my wife — I decided it had to be a sign. The GTO was clearly meant to become the newest member of our garage.
Was buying a bright orange 6.0-litre V8 during a fuel-price crisis rational? Absolutely not.
Would I do it again? Absolutely.
